When the whine of the Dremel reverberates throughout the neighborhood, dust swirls, and the deck is littered with gourd shards, its a clear indication that gourd-carving season is in full swing. Nothing is more satisfying than taking natures raw canvas and creating a work of art on its shell. The difficult part is deciding what to create out of the gourd, and of course, listening to my husband complain that hearing the constant drone of the drill is like living in a dentist office. The time it takes to handle each gourd from scrubbing them clean, to designing, cutting, coloring, and putting on the final coat of protection provides an intimacy with each creation. I distinctly remember each unique child and often remember details about the adoptive family. It is bitter sweet, yet rewarding to sell a piece of art that has a bit of me in every creation. Each gourd is named and ready to journey out into the world, bringing a bit of beauty and pleasure to its surroundings.
I'm a retired teacher, happily married mother of 3 children and 5 grandchildren, who started creating art late in life. I feel lucky to have this opportunity to play with all sorts of materials from mosaic, to watercolor, to ink, acrylic, and collage along with gourd art.
